Many persons visit Chicago for its beautiful natural attractions, skyscrapers, or merely to enjoy the pleasure of living in the big city. However, those who love food have a special reason to visit Chicago. Chicago boasts of certain dishes that cannot be found anywhere else in the country. Further, there are certain restaurants in this city that have their own unique signature dishes that will not be available even in the best restaurants and hotels outside the city.

Those who love food will be overwhelmed by the sheer choice available in the city. Chicago is one big city that has retained a small town love for street food. You will come across many vendors offering a variety of street food consumed by a large number of individuals. Unlike other cities, street food is not considered suitable for poor people alone. There are many persons who can afford the most expensive restaurants but find it impossible to escape the lure of street food of Chicago.

If you love a fine dining experience, Chicago is the place to be. There are numerous festivals and events that are planned around the different popular cuisines in the city. Make sure you research on the internet and plan your trip in such a manner that you enjoy these festivals at zero extra cost.

Whatever you do, do not make the mistake of thinking that you can explore the gastronomic delights available in the city in a single trip. You will have to repeat your visits again and again to explore all that the city has to offer.

Nestled among the Great Lakes where watersheds and rivers converge is Chicago. This collection of steel and stone stands as one of the country’s most famed destinations.

Incorporated in 1837, it has bloomed into the third largest city in the United States (shattering census records and witnessing endless swells of its population, a reflection of its varied heritage. Immigrants flocked to the area during its conception, looking for new opportunities). Its bold architecture, distinct districts and modern beauty mark it an ideal location for those craving excitement.

There is peace to find within the glass borders, however: Millennium Park offers refuge from the crowds.

Tucked within Chicago’s downtown area (which is recommended for all potential residents. A moving company quote will help to detail the costs of seeking property here) is 25 acres of unexpected greenery. Millennium Park constructed between 1998 and 2004 allows guests to experience a variety of outdoor pleasures. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion offers concerts and events. Crown Fountain combines water, light and streaming videos for an interactive experience. The Lurie Garden sweeps gently among the skyscraper shadows. BP Pedestrian Bridge is an architectural delight, with its girders curving wildly. And the Harris Theater is an open-air venue that boasts some of the most dynamic performances in Illinois. There is much to do.

Millennium Park is often touted as Chicago’s most ambitious project and all visitors will quickly agree. Its unique appeal cannot be denied, and those craving more than concrete will find it to be perfect. It is a combination of art, gardens and sophistication: much like the city itself.

“…Now, we need to make sure the water is safe,” the US EPA’s regional administrator, Susan Hedman, said. The Chicago River and it’s connecting waterways aren’t monitored because they are exempt from the city’s otherwise tough clean water provisions, and Chicago is the only US city that doesn’t disinfect the wastewater it dumps into the river. So it’s really dirty. It’s exempt from the clean water laws because it was always assumed that the waterways would not be used for recreation.

The US office of the EPA sent a letter to Illinois EPA with strong suggestions for cleaning up the water “as soon as possible.” The letter threatened that if the state of Illinois didn’t adhere to strict clean water laws soon that it would enforce them itself. It demanded that more strict standards be enforced in parts of the Chicago River, the Little Calumet River and the Cal-Sag Channel.

Chicago residents are likely to see raises in their sewer bills to pay for the work needed to upgrade two water treatment plants to disinfect the waste water it treats.

A spokesperson for the Illinois EPA said that the state is already trying to get disinfection equipment for the sewage-treatment plants and hopes to have them in operation within three years.

Cruises are quickly becoming the number one option for a family vacation. You can never go wrong with vacationing aboard an elegant and fun cruise ship during your next family vacation.

When going on a cruises you can pick which exotic location you’d like to visit. Whether it’s the Caribbean, Hawaii or the Bahamas, you can’t possibly go wrong.

There are endless amounts of activities your family can partake in while on vacation. There are so many activities that even your young children be a part of and enjoy. From parties to pirate training to special shows, group activities and the various pools, cruise lines will go all out to make sure that everyone in your family is having a non-stop fun-filled vacation. Group activities are great since your children can interact with other kids their age while on vacation.

While the children are off learning and enjoying group activities, parents can take advantage of the many casinos, pools or golf courses the cruise ship has to offer.Vacations not just meant for children to have fun, but parents can have a fabulous time as well.

Once the fun winds down a little bit, you can unwind at the spa that’s located on your cruise ship. There’s a kids pool for the young children and a larger pool for adults. The nice thing about cruises is they make stops. Depending on the location, you can go on an adventurous hike in the woods or do some snorkeling in the ocean.

Going on a cruise is the best choice for your next family vacation. Say goodbye to boring trips and hello to exciting and adventurous vacations.

It’s time to grab your Guinness and long (preferably green) underwear for Chicago’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Cruise! While some might argue that March is not an ideal time of year for a cruise around the Chicago River, this event’s track record of selling out begs to differ. The Irish will raise a glass, elements be damned, so come join this hearty (or possibly crazy) stock on March 12th.

This cruise is worth taking, if for no other reason than to see the Chicago River in all its emerald glory. For over forty years, the river is dyed green in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, and this year will be no exception. See it up close up while enjoying some of the traditional Irish fare that will be offered buffet-style aboard this expedition provided by Shoreline Cruises. While you munch on (potatoes?) you can learn about the role of the Irish in forming the great city of Chicago we see today.

To avoid conflicts with the popular St. Patrick’s Day Parade, there will be two departures available for the St. Patrick’s Day Lunch Cruise that will be offered pre (10:00 a.m.) and post (2:00 p.m.) parade festivities. Both cruises last about an hour and a half and depart from the Shoreline docks at Ogden Slip, located near the entrance of the Navy Pier. Tickets for these cruises are $31 for adults, $29 for seniors, and $17 for children.

If the green water isn’t enough of a draw for you, perhaps fireworks will do the trick. Shoreline is offering a third cruise in the evening for prime viewing of the St. Patrick’s Day fireworks. These tickets are priced at $32 for patrons of all ages and tickets for the three cruises will open for sale on March 7th. The fireworks are scheduled to be set off at 7:00 p.m., but there is no word yet on the departure time of the cruise. Check the Shoreline Sightseeing website for updated information.

It’s funny that in times of financial hardship, education is often among the first to be put on the chopping block. If things are bad out there, don’t we want our kids to be smarter and better prepared to face what appears to be an increasingly unstable future? Apparently, the Chicago school district attorney’s decision to fire almost 1,300 teachers last summer would indicate the contrary.

The school district attorney’s decision was a response to the Chicago Teachers Union’s unwillingness to cut almost $100 million in wages and benefits. No one was safe, dispelling the myth that tenure gives a teacher job security, to the point of being untouchable. Out of those fired, 750 were tenured teachers.

Since summer of 2010, a majority of those that were fired have found work teaching in other districts or been rehired by CPS. The union is fighting for what they estimate to be about 500 teachers who still remain out-of-work and asking that their jobs be restored.

With the bickering back and forth between the union and the school district attorney, it seems like one key point has been ignored. What about the students who lost their energetic and passionate young teachers? These teachers never had a prayer; their lack of seniority put them first on the list. What about the struggling students who are now getting lost in the larger classes? What about the brilliant students, whose talents won’t be discovered and cultivated?

We ask students to think critically about the world around them, but do we? What message does this send about the value our country places on education?

Many people have lost their jobs in this recession, but consider those who lost something less tangible: inspiration brought on by an inspiring person. In a sense, this kind of loss is immeasurable because true inspiration can lead to infinite possibilities. Sorry about that, kids.

Chicago isn’t the first place to have a teacher-student sex scandal blow up in the media, but it is unique in that their coverage has asked people to consider whether there is a double standard in the way the public reacts depending on the sex of the accuser. In this case, the woman, a teacher named Ashley Blumenshine, was accused of having sexual relations with one of her students.

Would public reaction be different if the teacher was male? The answer is a resounding yes! For some reason, an act that labels one person a sex offender renders another person the best teacher ever. How is that possible? Perhaps because when boys have sexual relations with an older woman, they are viewed by their peers, and even older males, as being lucky. Conversely, when an older man who sleeps with a young girl, he is thought to have stolen her innocence, thus making her the victim.

This mindset is wrong for more reasons then there is time to delve into here, but the resounding one is that it’s an abuse of power. The teacher, regardless of sex, who engages in this deplorable conduct is guilty of grossly abusing his or her power, and breaking the trust that was given to them by the school, the parents, and society. For that alone, they should be condemned.

Then there is the ick factor to consider. The same ick response that a priest molestation case elicits should apply here. Have you ever spent time with a high school boy? Can you imagine engaging in sexual relations with him? If that doesn’t make you say ick, then something is definitely wrong with you, and that’s another part of these cases that the authorities don’t seem to be dwelling on. These adult women having sex with young boys in their care are sick. Moreover, they are unstable, and that emotional instability and the desire to enter a relationship with the cruelest animal known to man, aka the teenage male, is evidence of their psychosis. There should be some real concern, as emotional instability has the potential to manifest itself in many ways, some being dangerous.

Where can you enjoy a full bar and a great band with 500 of your closest friends? Chicago’s Double Door, of course! The Double Door is located in Wicker Park and is considered an intuition by Chicago natives.

The Double Door serves as venue for a wide variety of musical genres, so you’re sure to find a show you’ll enjoy. If concert tickets were a sacrifice you made to the recession, you can stop feeling guilty. At the Double Door, a bigger name doesn’t mean a bigger price. It is rare that ticket prices will exceed $20, regardless of the artist. Some of these acts include The Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, and the Rolling Stones. Moreover, the alcoholic beverages range between $3 and $5. Who says you can’t always get what you want?

The Double Door is general admission, so there are no seats for you lazy folks out there. However, if you like to get to know someone a bit before sweating on them, you may want to duck out of the main floor and head to the basement, where there is an additional bar, pool tables, and booths. There is also a mezzanine with another bar where you can still see the stage.

The excellent acoustics in this venue make the Double Door a favorite with musicians as well as fans. The Double Door offers some very reasonable deals and extensive in-house options for recording live performances. In addition, they offer full production rehearsal time seven days a week. Utilize their talented staff of engineers to hone your skills and make your performance unforgettable.

Come listen to music the way it was meant to be heard.

What do you want to happen to your body when you die?

Death, especially our own, isn’t a subject we love to entertain, but it’s a certainty, along with taxes (I’m talking to you, Wesley Snipes). It’s also a subject that elicits a great deal of emotion and consequently, people have some strong opinions on it. In Chicago, one man, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart is calling for an end to indigent burials.

Dart says that the practice of burying several people in one casket is appalling and cites the recent case of 26 babies being placed in the same wooden box to illustrate his point. Perhaps he and others are still reeling from the scandal at Burr Oak Cemetery two years ago. Apparently the cemetery was charged with taking dead people out of their graves, tossing them, and reselling the plots, then filling up the used grave with another person’s remains. It was even reported that a mass grave containing the remains of dead corpses that had been removed was discovered.

Digging up corpses and wooden boxfuls of dead babies are disturbing without a doubt, but as a society, we need to start thinking about alternatives. There is simply not enough room to bury each person in an individual plot, not to mention the fact that cemeteries are terrible for the environment. Why not cremate people? Isn’t it really about the ceremony and the act of celebrating a person’s life and letting them go? Is that decaying corpse or pile of ashes really your loved one? Anyone who has been to an open casket funeral or wake can attest to the fact that it’s odd because though what’s there resembles the person you knew, there is clearly an absence. They’re not there anymore. They’ve moved on, now shouldn’t you?

This doesn’t mean that desecrating bodies is acceptable. We need to find viable ways to handle the dead without overshadowing the living, while being respectful to the memories of the people they were. If nothing else, at least Sheriff Dart has started a dialogue about the subject. Too bad the other side can’t comment.

Refinancing your car loan isn’t just for those who are looking to save money. Over the past couple of years there has been an increase in the number of people in Chicago who have decided to pursue a refinancing. With this increase in the number of people who are seeking out auto refinancing loans it has made many people wonder exactly what are the benefits of an auto refinance.

The biggest benefit that comes from refinancing any type of auto loan is the ability to save money. Many people who purchased cars three to four years ago were forced to accept auto loans they had high interest rates. High interest rates mean higher car payments and more money being paid back to the lender in interest. When people refinance their auto loan they are able to essentially receive a new auto loan at a lower interest rate. Over the past few years, interest rates have plummeted, which caused many people to consider refinancing in order to get a better interest rate.

While it might seem as if a car loan refinance only benefits the loan holder it can actually benefit the whole economy. As these people are taking advantage of lower interest rates they have more money in their monthly budgets to spend, if they choose. This money can be used to purchase other items and can help jumpstart the economy. The economy has been lagging due to people not having money to spend. This income allows people to make purchases and shop when they otherwise might have cut back.

Despite the fact that the majority of the people of Chicago are refinancing for personal reasons, the increase in auto refinancing might just be able to help the surrounding economy and help pick up stores and businesses that might otherwise have shut their doors forever due to the bad current economy.

The United States Supreme Court voted to remove Chicago’s 28-year-old gun ban in June of 2010. Chicago Police Department statistics reveal that after the ban was enacted, the handgun murder rate in the city actually increased and Chicago citizen faced one of highest murder rates in the country, four times that of the national average.

The good news? Since lifting the ban, police report that they are starting to see a decline in the murder rate. The homicide rate is at the lowest it’s been in 25 years.

Perhaps bolstered by this news, or in reflection of the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and several others, nine bills relating to firearms have been filed with the Illinois House of Representatives. Though they vary, they all have the common goal of making gun regulations less stringent.

Part of loosening regulations might mean making Wisconsin, the only state other than Illinois to prohibit concealed weapons, go solo. There is legislation on the table to allow adults who complete a certification course to carry concealed firearms.

The idea is that the unknown might keep some would-be gangsters in check. This philosophy says that if anyone could be carrying a weapon, then you might be a little less hasty to start a gunfight. This is further supported by data that shows decreased crime rates where concealed weapons are allowed.

So is an armed society a more polite society? Chicagoans will soon find out.

If only these criminals would do something other than, you know, be criminals.

These guys (and gals) are smart. Have you ever watched prison shows? These guys make MacGyver look like a chump. They can make a serious weapon out of a few discarded pieces of plastic, wires, tape, and rubber bands. I can barely work my coffee maker. Why aren’t they making the next IPhone, or better yet, finding a cure for cancer? So what do we, as a society, decide to do with them? Put them in prison. With other, even smarter prisoners. Is that really a good idea? Consider the character Johnny Deep played in the movie Blow, which was based on a real character. After his first stint in prison, he comments, “Danbury wasn’t a prison, it was a crime school. I went in with a Bachelor or Marijuana, came out with a Doctorate of cocaine.”

That’s the least of our problems. Unfortunately, not all techie people join the Geek Squad or work at Computer City. Some of them use their powers for evil, as evidenced by the recent rash of brazen robberies in hotels off of Michigan Avenue in Chicago. No hold-ups, no threats, just a lot of know-how employed the wrong (or right) way, depending on your perspective.

Over $140,000 has been stolen since December of 2010 from private cash machines. How did they do it? They used special codes to reprogram the machines to spit out more money than they should in a single transaction. They would leave the machine as they found it, so there was nothing to indicate anything was wrong.

Authorities say that these robberies are most likely an inside job. Does that make it better or worse? On one hand, it’s disconcerting that someone on the outside could be that clever, but on the other, it’s alarming to think your friendly neighborhood teller could be taking you to the cleaners.

One thing is certain. Technology, for all its advantages, creates opportunity for crime. Be careful when shopping or paying bills online and monitor your spending so you can alert your bank to fraudulent activity if they don’t catch it first. All you can do is be as vigilant as possible, because sadly, no matter what you do, the criminal is always one step and at least two brains ahead of you.

While we’d all like to think that our vacation will go off without a hitch, the chances are highly improbable. Most of the time you may just deal with lost luggage or delayed flights, rude cab drivers, and maybe some terrible restaurant service, but there are some vacation horror stories that might make us all think twice about ever leaving home.

While these two-trip-ruining tempests might make your blood boil, you can try to be prepared.

Surprise Weather
On December 20, 2006 the area surrounding Denver, Colorado was hit by a blizzard that crippled travel of every kind, burying it in up to five feet of snow. Just before Christmas, Interstate Highways and U.S. Routes surrounding the city were closed. All the flights coming out of Denver were canceled, and they weren’t letting any flights come in. While many were stranded in the airport, the blizzard also caused hiccups in travel plans all across the nation, since many flights utilize Denver as a connecting stop.

Snow storms aren’t the only possible weather fiasco you may encounter. Your trip to the Bahamas may be cut short when a hurricane decides to head straight for those Atlantic waters. While you can’t always avoid something as unforeseen as five feet of snow or hurricane force winds, you can be a bit prepared for inclement weather on your vacation by following these tips:

● Avoid trips on the Atlantic coast during hurricane season (June through November)

● Steer clear of northern locations during peak winter months

● Research your destination before you make reservations to find out what time of year provides the best weather

● Check weather forecasts as your vacation approaches

Technical Difficulties
Problems on your vacation can also result from technical difficulties, such as overbooked flights or hotels giving you a full size bed when you requested a king. Many circumstances would hardly match what Comair did to 30,000 passengers by canceling flights on Christmas Day in 2004. Technical issues knocked down all of their flight-managing computers, and the airline grounded all flights in 118 cities. While they attempted to move passengers to Delta flights, most were unsuccessful.

There isn’t much you can do about a problem of this magnitude because you certainly can’t see it coming; however, it might be a good idea to be prepared as best as possible. In addition to keeping your response in check (losing your temper won’t make the situation better), take these precautionary steps:

● Bring toiletries and extra under garments in your carry-on, just in case luggage is lost

● If you’re driving, find mechanics along your route in case your car breaks down

● Print reservation confirmations and take them with you to verify your hotel accommodations, flight plans, and more

● Prepare a back-up plan, such as a car rental ahead of time just in case a flight is canceled – pick out a hotel just in case you can’t make it through the weather to your vacation rental, etc.

This is just a small portion of all the things that can go wrong on a vacation. Regardless of what happens, you’ll look back on it one day and laugh – hopefully. Do you have a vacation horror story? Share it below.

Any book nerd or individual involved in the publishing industry can attest that the literary scene is alive and well in Chicago. With the snow piled high and no clear end in sight, it’s time to hunker down with a good book while we wait for spring. So why not do it in a new venue and with a book written by a fellow Chicagoan?

Chicago’s Cultural Center houses the Chicago Publishers Gallery and Café, an institution that contains a collection of over 2,300 books and periodicals from over 100 book publishers and 75 periodical publishers. What could be better than that? How about the fact that all of them, as well as hundreds of authors, are based in Chicago or greater Illinois?

At the Chicago Publishers Gallery and Café, no genre of literature is excluded. Comic book enthusiasts can peruse the shelves side-by-side with lovers of the classics. You can find best-selling novels or just read the daily newspaper. After you grab a snack from the café, you can pick your nook. There are six different themes of nooks to choose from: general interest, small/university presses, Chicago writers, children’s, magazine and periodicals, and local interest.

Get comfortable because these materials are not for sale. This makes the Gallery feel more library-like, despite the fact that checking out books is not permitted. Don’t fret; patrons are encouraged to purchase books through the Gallery’s Amazon store or through one of Chicago’s independent booksellers.

Individuals interested in the publishing industry would do well to utilize the Gallery’s computers and browse the extensive publishing resources available. The Gallery is part of Department of Cultural Affairs, and thus makes building community among members of the industry a top priority. Local publishers and writers can benefit from the events and programs that the Gallery organizes to support their endeavors. It is worth checking out the calendar of events periodically, as you will certainly find a panel discussion or presentation that interests you.

Just like there is a nook for everyone, there is also a niche. You will surely find yours at the Chicago Publishers Gallery and Café.

A vacation to the Windy City of Chicago, Illinois is a great way to do something fun with your tax refund. When tax season rolls around, it is no surprise that many individuals like to have fun with the money they receive back. Sure, investing or doing something financially-responsible is a good choice, but why not have some fun?

Before you start planning your vacation, take advantage of a quick and easy way to file your taxes. Utilize free online tax filing services that can get it done in a quick and efficient manner. The services can also help you along the way, should you be unsure of anything when you file your taxes. As always, consult a tax professional if you need personalized help.

Once you’ve completed that process, it’s time to plan your vacation to the fun and exciting city of Chicago. There are plenty of things to do in Chicago, boasting a number of fun activities. Even the food alone is worth the trip, from world-famous restaurants and steakhouses to Chicago-style hot dogs and deep-dish pizza.

You may want to pinpoint some of the biggest attractions. There are plenty of free activities in Chicago that you shouldn’t miss, such as riding the giant Ferris wheel (that part isn’t free) at Navy Pier to Buckingham Fountain.

Don’t forget your camera. From the Lincoln Park Zoo, Millennium Park, and a number of other museums and architectural sites of interest, there is plenty that you will want to capture. Free admission is available for many of these attractions, such as at the Field Museum (you can see the largest Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil in the world here) at certain points of the year.

Take a fun trip to enjoy your tax refund money. Surely the city of Chicago has a lot to offer, no matter what you’re looking to do or enjoy in a vacation.

The Windy City is a great destination for couples. There are so many romantic places to visit, you may not want to leave. Here few tips to make your visit as romantic as possible.

Restaurants

There are thousands of restaurants in Chicago. So, before venturing out for food, you may want to prepare yourself a little bit. Be sure to not only do research while you’re in Chicago, but before you leave as well. Sites and apps like Google Maps, Yelp.com, and Urbanspoon can help you narrow down your choices.

One thing you really can’t go wrong with is a romantic private dining experience at one of Chicago’s many steakhouses. With a steakhouse, you can enjoy some of the most delicious food available, no matter what city you’re in. It’s also a very versatile type of dining facility. You could show up in jeans and a t-shirt, or a suit and tie, and either way you’ll fit right in.

We all know that Chicago is famous for their pizzas, but it’s really not the most romantic option out there. Take your sweetheart out for a casual lunch to enjoy a famous Chicago-style pizza, but save the passion for a nice dinner together at a great Chicago steakhouse.

Steakhouses are a wonderful place to take your sweetheart. What better way to show her that you care than to get a private table at a premier steakhouse and enjoy a great meal together. Plus, the food is absolutely delicious. You really can’t go wrong with an expertly prepared steak.

The After Dinner Fun

After you’ve enjoyed your tasty meal, go ahead and spend the rest of your romantic night out on the town. One great destination is the Art Institute of Chicago. There you and your sweetheart can gaze upon some of the most wonderful pieces of art ever created. You could also enjoy a great play at one of Chicago’s many theaters.

Chicago hasn’t forsaken its alternative music fans; they have clearly found a home at the Metro, a place worth going to if for no other reason than to see the stage where bands like Nirvana and R.E.M. played in their early, most angst-filled years. As long as we’re name-dropping, let’s really go for it! To give further testament to the Metro’s chops are musicians like Bob Dylan, Prince, and James Brown who have all delighted audiences at past Metro events. More recent noteworthy acts include The White Stripes, The Yeah Yeahs, and the Foo Fighters.

The ticket prices range as widely as the artists, so expect to pay more for the bigger names, though you can sometimes save money by ordering tickets in advance. You can often see local acts for less than $5. If you’re under 21 and love music, you should definitely keep an eye on the Metro’s calendar of events. Most shows are all ages, with the exception of some late-night weekend shows that require concert goers to be 18 or over. For the 21 and over crowd, the Metro offers access to its Smart Bar, a dance club where some of the best DJs in Chicago spin dance music until the wee hours.

For those who enjoy the literary arts, the Metro offers a special event this March. Come to “Literary Rock and Roll: Class Acts” on the 16th for this event presented by the Columbia College Chicago Fiction Writing Department’s Story Week. The evening will include readings and signings by authors Irvine Welsh (Crime), Preston L. Allen (Jesus Boy), and Gina Frangello (Slut Lullabies). There will also be comedy and music. What could make having your copy of Trainspotting signed by Mr. Welsh himself and gathering with fellow eggheads better? Free admission! Story Week is free and open to the public, so come join the celebration of the written word.

When you take a vacation, be sure to think about the friends and relatives who didn’t get a chance to travel with you. You can give them a small piece of your vacation experience by sending them souvenirs. Most cities have numerous types of souvenirs that you can purchase for your loved ones. Just be sure to choose an option that they will enjoy.

Types of Vacation Souvenirs

Some of the most common souvenirs include shirts and postcards. Most people will appreciate receiving one of these souvenirs from you.

Many tourist destinations have their own shirts to let people know that you have been there. The shirts might feature popular landmarks, hotels and restaurants. Sending one of these souvenirs to your friends and family members not only gives them a new piece of clothing to wear, it also gives them a tiny fragment of your experience at the popular tourist destination.

Even simple postcards that feature landscapes or skylines can make your loved ones feel special. They don’t have to be elaborate. A scene of the city’s landscape, for instance, can let your loved ones know where you have been and that you were thinking of them. It’s a way to share some of the scenery that you have experienced. Writing a note on the postcard makes the souvenir even more meaningful.

Choosing Vacation Souvenirs

Whether you decide to purchase shirts, postcards or other types of souvenirs, make sure you consider the preferences of each person. There is no sense in purchasing an item that the recipient won’t care about or want to use. Instead, think through each purchase to help ensure that you choose a souvenir that will make your loved ones feel special. After all, you are sharing an important part of your life with them. You might as well share it in a way that will appeal to them.

The well-known song about the Windy City says it best, and it’s not hard to see why Chicago can be your kind of town. With a variety of attractions, different cuisines, and diverse neighborhoods, this city is among the most livable places in the U.S. and is a top tourist spot. Whether you’re planning to visit for a few days or are planning a permanent move, there are some things you’ll want to know.

Getting Around

One of the best ways to traverse the city is by riding the “L,” which is short for the elevated train. This transportation system can quickly move you through some of the busiest parts of town. There are also city buses and plenty of taxis. When the weather is right, Chicago is a walk-able city with wide sidewalks that are easy to navigate.

Where to Stay

If you’re in town for a short visit, choose a hotel in a district you like. Shoppers will prefer staying near Michigan Avenue (aka The Magnificent Mile), while those who want to see multiple shows should book a room in the Theatre District. Quieter lodging with convenient access to the popular areas is found in and around north Lakeshore Drive. The Loop is a more eclectic neighborhood with some fun shops and eateries. For those who are moving to the area, Chicago apartments are available in these and other parts of the city. Be safe during your time in the city by avoiding areas that aren’t well lit and make you feel uncomfortable.

What to Eat

Deep dish pizza is synonymous with Chicago and one of the best places to go for mouthwatering pie is Lou Malnati’s. Stop in a Portillo’s Restaurant to sample a hot-dog prepared the way Chicagoans like it–with relish, mustard, onions, tomatoes, and other delicious goodies. Chicago Restaurant Week makes the cold of February more tolerable, as 200 of the city’s best restaurants serve up discounted meals.

There are few places that your palate and ears can be experience simultaneous and intense pleasure. Upon further consideration, there may be only one, and it calls Chicago home. Whether you do the same, or are just visiting, you should put Schubas at the top of list. This bar/restaurant/music venue may be the only place where you can devour amazing macaroni and cheese while watching a mind-blowing live music show. What more can you really ask for?

Look Inside

Chicagoans know not to judge a book by its cover, and tourists would be wise to keep that in mind when cruising the bar scene. Don’t be fooled by the less than aesthetically pleasing shell; it gives no hint of the heart beating within. Music lovers of every genre will find a home at Schubas, where live music is played seven days a week. Given the wide variety of music played there, it would be prudent to check the Schubas’ calendar regularly. Schubas has also hosted big names such as Tori Amos, Dave Matthews Band, and Train in the past; these musicians perform on the same intimate setting where local and lesser known artists play their hearts out.

The good eats, courtesy of Schubas’ Harmony Grill, can be washed down with a variety of reasonably priced alcoholic beverages for under $5 at Schubas’ Tavern, which was built in 1903 as part of the Schlitz Brewery. Schubas pays homage to Schlitz in their décor, as well as their deals. Patrons can enjoy deals on Schlitz beer that go as low as $2.

Enough people dug the charm of Schubas for the institution to remodel several years ago and create an elegant private banquet facility. They are open for lunch as well as dinner, so if you like a diamond in the rough, this may be a place you want to consider for hosting an event.

Though it’s still cold outside, Schubas will keep you warm with good food and great music. Stay tuned.

You’re heading to Chicago. You might be heading there for business as Chicago is the top convention site in the country. You may have family or friends that live in the area. Whatever your reason for traveling to the Windy City is, there are plenty of cultural attractions to see during your free time.

Your first stop might be the The Art Institute of Chicago. Whether you are a fine art connoisseur or just want to live “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” the Institute is what you are looking for. The painting “Nighthawks” is my personal favorite. The Field Museum also has exhibits that feature cultures from around the world. You definitely want to check out the mummies while you are there, spooky!
After you are done with the museums maybe you will feel like a little shopping. No worries there, you’re in Chicago! If you’re looking for shopping you can’t miss by hitting the Magnificent Mile. 400 stores sitting on eight city blocks should be enough to satisfy almost any shopper.

If music is what you’re looking for there are plenty of options for you as well. The House of Blues has acts multiple times a week. National touring acts also will play at the United Center.

All of these things to see, but how are you going to get there? What if you don’t want to drive in the city? No problem, the train runs from O’Hare to the Loop, putting you within range of all of these attractions.

With Chicago being a major convention destination it will be helpful to check what’s going to be in town during the time you plan to visit. There are plenty of hotel options so you can find one that fits your style and budget.

The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago is a unique way to learn and enjoy the natural world. It is located in the Chicago Museum Campus and was first constructed in 1893. Its exhibits are not just limited to the natural world, but encompass a variety of areas including science, history, art and archaeology. Its primary purpose at its inception was to serve as a home for the collection of artifacts that were on display at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. From that early time, Museum now houses over 20 million items and is home to a research library with over 200,000 books in it.

As you enter the museum, you can walk through exhibits and learn about biology, animals live under the ocean, fossils, various Native American cultures and the culture of the African people. There is also the biggest preserved Tyrannosaurus rex in the world, named Sue, you will want to check out. Another popular exhibit at the museum are the man eaters of Tsavo that terrorized natives that were helping to build a bridge in Africa. Killed by John Patterson, they have been donated to the museum and are an eerie sight to see.

During your visit, if you have any questions there are many individuals stationed at strategic points that can answer any questions you might have. You can also take in a variety of plants from around the earth and can even get a look inside the history of ancient Egypt.

The museum is not as busy if you come in the afternoon, which gives you more freedom to move around and take your time when looking at the exhibits. There is an admission fee to get into the Field Museum, but there may be a special price offered on certain days. Taking an afternoon to visit the Field Museum of Natural History is well worth the effort and will become one of your favorite stops on your trip.

The Art Institute of Chicago is not only one of the nation’s top art schools, but also features a spectacular museum for visitors to enjoy. The museum is open throughout the week, with a daily entrance fee. You can enjoy the museum for free on Thursdays from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. It offers a wide selection of excellent works from artists throughout history.

For the holidays, and any other time of the year, you can get a look into an extraordinary tiny world. Mrs. James Ward Thorne is the artist who created the 68 different miniature rooms that are on display, made to exacting detail at a scale of one inch to one foot. Filled with Victorian charm, they are dressed up on a small scale each year for the holidays.

You can also check out the Gray Collection, which spans over seven centuries of great artworks. The works come from periods including the Renaissance, Baroque and nineteenth centuries with such artists included as Ruebens, Guecino, and Tiepolo. You can also see paintings and other works by Matisse, Picasso, and Miro. Robert Gray was an art dealer who amassed this astounding collection, with the museum having over 120 of the best works in the collection.

You can bring your family in for a variety of fun activities. These include crafts, exhibits, games and various others. There are also special family oriented programs offered, so check the museum schedule for the latest updates. If you get hungry, the cafe inside the museum offers foods, deserts and drinks for you to quench your hunger. You can also bring in pencils and a sketchbook if you love to draw and copy from master artists.

The Chicago Art Institute Museum is the perfect way to spend an afternoon when you are in the city. You can enjoy beautiful art, a relaxing meal and enjoy some quality family time.

There are a number of ways that you can get around Chicago and see the sights, but one of the most unique is to take a Segway tour. This rolling, electric two-wheeled vehicle takes you through the city without having to walk for endless hours. They are easy to maneuver and you will be led with a group by a trained tour guide to various destinations around the city. Many of these tours will focus on a particular aspect of the city, such as the architecture or on a particular section. Whatever you choose, you will have a great time and will not be worn out at the end.

A general Segway tour of the city will take you to a number of various points of interest, giving you time to stop and explore. Some of the places you might go include: Shed Aquarium, Millennium Park, Soldier Field, The Field Museum, Buckingham Fountain and The Adler Planetarium. Another option is to take a tour that focuses on famous architectural structures in the city, getting the scoop on each building’s history and construction. Other tours will be a mix of both, giving you an overall look at the city’s sights and history.

Each of these tours can run approximately 2 or more hours, depending on the section of the city you are going through and the focus it has. You will get numerous opportunities to take pictures and to visit the museums, zoo and to experience the city. You and your family will have to take a short safety lesson and will be required to wear a helmet while riding the Segway. You will need to contact each company in order to get the time for each tour and any relevant information. It is important that you set aside at least an afternoon to take one of these and to pack lightly as you will not be able to carry too much while riding.

There are many ways to see Chicago, and one of the most fun can be to take a bicycle tour through the city. You will not only get around easier, but will get some beneficial exercise in the process. The bikes offered come in a variety of styles, depending upon your personal preference. These include: hybrids, mountain bikes, raod bikes, cruisers, tandems, bikes for children and others. This allows you to ride that is more comfortable for you.

You can rent bikes at locations such as the Navy Pier, Millenium Park, North Avenue Beach, Riverwalk and Foster Beach. The rides vary in their destinations and routes, giving you greater choice in the kind of tour you take. Some take you through various neighborhoods, parks around the city and along the lakefront. There are some stations where you can rent a bicycle just to take out on your own. There are also tours taken around the city by bike at night for a different experience.

These companies will often provide you with the necessary safety gear, such as helmets, to wear on the ride. In some cases, you may have to provide your own. These tours run in the warmer months of the year, beginning in the early spring. It is best to set aside a full morning or afternoon for one of these tours, giving yourself plenty of time to enjoy the rides and sights without being strapped for time.

Some tours may require a reservation, so it is best to call in advance to make arrangements. You should also check with the tour company to see what kinds of bikes they offer for you to choose from. Another great reason to see Chicago this way is the money you will save on gas, you won’t have to worry about parking or getting around through traffic. You can just get on, push off and ride without worry, taking your time for a trip through Chicago.

If you are visiting Chicago and don’t have the time or funds to take a guided tour, you don’t have to miss out on the experience. You can actually have a free, portable tour guide right in your pocket as you stroll around, taking in the sights. This is more possible than you can imagine, and is easy to do. There are a large number of free audio tours available through the internet that you can download onto an MP3 or other music player. Others you may have to pay a fee for in order to download. Then you can truly have a portable tour guide in your pocket.

The Chicago Office of Tourism has a variety of tours, including ones that take you through Millenium Park and one titled “The History of the Chicago Blues.” There are even tours designed for your children to listen to. If you want an interesting walk, there is one tour that focuses on the Chicago Loop. This one takes you through a wide selection of famous architectural sites, theatres and points of cultural significance. There is another one that takes you through Humboldt Park, which lasts about an hour.

Other tours that cost will also take you through focused areas including architecture and the artistic side of Chicago. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the city and learn at the same time. One of the greatest advantages of these tours is that you can go at your pace and on your own schedule. You can pause and restart your tour whenever you choose. This is unlike a guided tour, where you have to stop and go on the group’s schedule.

However you choose to explore Chicago, considering giving an audio tour a try. It is a very affordable way to learn about the city and you have complete control over the entire affair.

If you love to watch horse races, Arlington Park in Chicago is the place for you to be. Arington offers visitors an exciting time, with the racing season running from April through September each year. Special races are also run on certain holidays, including: Memorial Day, Independance Day and Labor Day. The park was first built in 1927, and was closed for a short period from 1985 to 1989 due to a fire. It has a long history of racing, having been successful throughout the Great Depression and even held the first race with a $1 million prize, called The Arlington Million. The park has grown to be one of the top spots for visitors to see thoroughbred racing. It has also held such events as the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.

One of the best advantages of Arlington Park is its focus on providing quality entertainment for visitors within a family oriented atmosphere. When you and your family come to the park, you will get to see some of the traditional practices that were a common part of early horse racing. For example, before the race a bugler in the historical outfit plays before the race and you get to watch the jockeys parade in their mounts.

The park offers you and your family an excellent meal when all of you get hungry and you can take in an exciting race. You can also take advantage of one of the many eating establishments that are located nearby. The family-style atmosphere makes for a safe environment to bring your children, when they can get involved in the action as well. Arlington Park is dedicated to providing the best customer service that they can offer and is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon on your trip to Chicago. This is one experience you will definitely want to take advantage of.

Union Station is a fascinating and entertaining stop in Chicago, and will give you a view of one of the few early 20th century train depots that is left in the city. The station saw its height of used during the 1940s, with over 300 trains going in and out and carrying approximately 100,000 commuters on a daily basis. Currently, approximately 50,000 people make use of the station and the trains that run through, but there’s much more to Union Station than that.

A beautiful section of the station to visit is the Great Hall, which goes all the way back to 1925. This portion of the depot was constructed with marble floors and walls, has bronze torches for decoration and Corinthian style columns throughout. Those who love historical architecture will immensely enjoy this portion of the station. If you get hungry, there are numerous places for you to stop and grab a bite to eat. You can find various baked products, pizza, a deli and a food court with even more selection.

For the shopper, you can get a souvenir to take home in one of the many stores inside the station or simply grab you something to read. Union Station is also the perfect place to find an easy way to travel about the city. The Metra system offers a fast and affordable way to get around Chicago. You have a number of options when buying tickets, including those for a group, children, family fares or just a one-way ticket. At each stop, you can also pick up a map and a schedule showing you how to get around and what time each train arrives. Traveling this way can make getting to some of the major sites much easier and less stressful than trying to drive and find a parking place in the city. Making a stop at Union Station is well worth your time.

The John Hancock Building can offer you a unique view of Chicago from 94 floors up. This is where the Hancock Observatory is located, which sits 1,000 feet over the Magnificent Mile. This is the one place in town where you can see that city from 360° all around on a wide open skywalk. An interesting feature at the observatory is a talking telescope called the Soundscope, which tells you about 16 different sites you can view through it using narration and various sound effects. It can talk to viewers in a variety of languages, including Japanese, Spanish, French and English. As you look around, you will be able to see into the states of Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Another interesting feature in the observatory is the History Wall, which is full of photographs featuring images from Chicago’s past. You can also use a program called “Windows on Chicago,” where you can virtually travel around and learn about 80 different sites in the city. For those with a sweet tooth or who just want a good meal, you can go eat in The Cheesecake Factory which is found on the first floor of the Hancock Building. There is also a café that features various snacks and beverages if you want something on the lighter side. During the holidays, you can actually go ice skating 1,000 feet up during “Skating in the Sky.”

This is the perfect place to go for an individual day out, a family outing or a romantic evening. There is a charge to go up on the skywalk, but children under the age of three can enter at no charge. There are also a variety of ticket options that you can choose from. The observatory is open every day of the week from 9 AM to 11 PM, with the last visitors being admitted at 10:30 PM. Checking out the Hancock Observatory should definitely be on your Chicago must-see list.

Frank Lloyd Wright is known as one of the premier creative architects of the modern era, and had a huge influence on modern design. But what you may not know is that he made his home and his studio near Chicago, a place where you can visit and learn more about this fascinating individual. His Oak Park studio has been preserved and open to the public by The Frank Loyd Wright Preservation Trust. The studio was built in 1898 and was the center of Wright’s creative pursuits until 1909. Here, he set up his Prairie style for architecture and tested many of the designs that he would construct for his various clients.

It took over 13 years and $3 million for the trust to finish restoring the buildings and property. It finally opened in 1974 and has been a favorite spot for architecture enthusiasts and interested individuals ever since. When you come for a visit, you can take part in a public tour of the property. These are offered on a daily basis except when the facility is closed on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. There is a fee to visit the property, and they recommend that you purchase your tickets in advance. These can be bought at the trust’s website or by contacting them by phone. Parking is free at the site and there is a museum gift shop to get souvenirs in.

You can also take a guided tour of his studio, or a walking tour that takes you through the historic district where some of his buildings are located. A fun way for the family to learn about Wright is to go on the Design Detectives Family Tour. Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio provide a unique and fascinating experience for you and your family when visiting Chicago.

Chicago has a deep-rooted tradition in music, and blues are a major part of that history. Blues music lovers every year love to come to the Chicago Blues Festival, which has been part of the city’s culture for the past 20 years. It occurs in Grant Park around the middle of June and draws some of the most talented musicians from all over. You will hear music ranging from boogie-woogie, swing, blues and delta blues. When you come out for this amazing festival, you will be bumping elbows with nearly a million others who come each year.

You can find more than the blues, though, experiencing every kind of music including jazz, gospel, country and Irish Celtic music as well. Chicago is home to a wide variety of music festivals throughout the year that are featured in Millennium Park and some of the other beautiful outdoor spots in the city. For example, you can attend Downtown Sound: New Music Mondays in Millennium Park, which is located in the Jay Pritzker Pavillion.

These events give you a flavor of the varied and diverse ethnic populations that populated the city in the late 19th and early 20th century. They brought with them their cultural traditions, including music, that help give the city its unique flavor and history. These events occur during the warmer months of the year from early spring into early fall and are generally free to the public. You can not only catch great talent but also get a taste of some excellent food sold by vendors. Check the Chicago festival’s website for a schedule of upcoming events and make one or two of them a part of your trip. They are the perfect way to spend an evening out, relax with some good music and enjoy some quality time together.

One of Chicago’s favorite attractions is the Brookfield Zoo, which has more than 2,000 animals housed on 216 acres. The zoo was first opened to the public in 1934 and was designed using a variety of natural obstacles to keep the animals separate from the visitors, such as moats. This makes for a more pleasant atmosphere over the traditional cage that is used in many zoos and allows for better viewing of the animals for visitors.

One exhibit you can visit is the “Great Bear Wilderness.” This new attraction is home to a wide variety of animals and birds, including bald eagles, polar bears, grizzly bears, wolves and bison. You not only get to see the animals in a natural like habitat, but also get to learn about their place in nature and how they survive on a daily basis. There are also shows featuring dolphins, classes for families and individuals along with various other activities that can make your day spectacular. When you get hungry, the zoo also features a number of dining establishments where you can get a meal. These can include a regular restaurant or you can just stop by a snack shop to get a light snack for the road.

The zoo is very large and features a wide variety of programming and sites, which cannot be fully explored in a single day. The zoo recommends that you start with the Exhibit and Animal Guide along with the zoo map to choose what things you and your family would like to see before you come. This way, you can hit the main aspects of the zoo if you are limited to a single day. If possible, you may want to plan more than one day in order to explore further. The Brookfield Zoo is an excellent way to spend a day while visiting Chicago.
